What is the best toothpaste?

Just like with toothbrushes, using any toothpaste is better than none at all. While some are engineered toward specific issues, they all can help your teeth as long as they have fluoride. Fluoride helps by replenishing the calcium and phosphate ions that make your teeth harder and more protected against tooth decay. Fluoride helps teeth in two ways: 1) When children eat or drink fluoride in small doses, it enters the bloodstream and becomes part of their developing permanent teeth. 2) Fluoride becomes part of the saliva and helps strengthen teeth from the outside, so acids are less able to damage tooth enamel. This process keeps your teeth strong while also helping to prevent cavities and tooth sensitivity.

There isn't one toothpaste that is particularly better than the other. All toothpastes have their benefits as long as you pay attention to what is in them. Our dentists can also prescribe a fluoride gel, if your child needs a higher level of fluoride, that you will rub on their teeth after brushing.

Either way you go, always make sure to carefully supervise your children when they use any fluoride product and keep fluoride supplements out of reach from children when not in use.
